In the US, we sit at a cross roads. One that will define the fate of our health and wellness, medical costs, exposure to chronic illnesses and life expectancy.

My goal is not to strike fear, but we do need to start exposing the realities of our behavior and set a path to change them. We have become a culture that waits until something is wrong before we act. Maybe it is pain that becomes chronic, rising stress, the impact of our food choices, our lack of exercise or more—any of these things can trigger a trip to the doctor. A trip that likely could have been prevented if we focused more on proactively managing our health.

Want some proof? OK, here are some facts:

  • 95% of all chronic diseases are caused by food choices, toxic food ingredients, nutritional deficiencies and lack of exercise (The Health Ranger)
  • 1 in 4 Americans have heart disease (American Public Health Association)
  • 1 in 3 Americans have high blood pressure (American Public Health Association)
  • 43% of Americans are considered obese; a 9% increase since 2008 (Emory University Stud)

Further, we have seen combined overweight and obesity rates climb to a staggering 70% plus of our society, while processed foods have become a standard at the American dinner table due to price and convenience. Meanwhile, “better-for-you” foods like meats low in saturated fats, fish, vegetables and fruit can be more expensive and take work to prepare.

It is time for Americans to start considering the impact of these choices, and begin a journey to prevent the negative outcomes they produce. It is time for us to create the prevention generation–one that demands we know where our foods come from, the importance of proper nutrition, the value of consistent exercise and access to qualified health and wellness professionals that can guide us.
